Food has been used in celebrations for thousands of years. It is so fun to get out books and magazines and watch the food network channel to try out new recipes for those around us. Oh how I love to experiment on those around me!
C ookies, fudge, even the much-maligned fruitcake are all popular one-size-fits-all holiday gifts. But gifts filled with fat and calories, while often enjoyed, may not be the best bet for a friend or relative who is struggling to stay in shape.

Laura Frankel decided to keep a kosher kitchen about 13 years ago. Frankel, chef and co-owner of Shallots Bistro in Skokie, Ill., is the author of Jewish Cooking for All Seasons: Fresh, Flavorful Kosher Recipes for Holidays and Every Day (Wiley, $34.95). She writes about what happened when she and her husband decided to enroll their son in a Jewish preschool.
